Meet our stain detective

One of the best ways to get rid of stains is to rinse the fabric in cold water before it has time to set in. If that didn't work, you can use our recommendations below. But please remember to first check if the fabric is suitable for these treatments.

Baby food

Soak in warm solution of Daz for at least 2 hours then wash as instructed on the clothing care label.

Beer

Pre-treat with Daz Liquid then wash as instructed on the clothing care label with a bleach containing product like Daz powder or tablet s.

For tough stains, dab with a solution of 1 part of vinegar (acetic acid) to 4 parts of water, rinse thoroughly.

Wash as instructed on the clothing care label.

Beetroot

Soak for 1 hour in COLD water. Wash in Daz powder or Daz tablets.

DO NOT use a colour or liquid detergent.

Alternatively, treat with Ace Coloursafe Bleach then wash as normal following the clothing care label.

Blackcurrant

Soak for 1 hour in COLD water. Wash in Daz powder or Daz tablets.

DO NOT use a colour or liquid detergent.

Alternatively, treat with Ace Coloursafe Bleach then wash as normal following the clothing care label.

Butter

Pre-treat with Daz Liquid. Leave for 1 hour. Wash as instructed on the clothing care label.

Chewing gum

Apply ice or put garment into a bag in the freezer to harden the gum. Break off as much gum as possible. Pre-treat with Daz Liquid then wash as normal following the clothing care label.

Chocolate

Soak in a warm Daz solution or pre-treat with Ace Coloursafe Bleach. Wash as normal following the clothing care label.

Coffee

Soak for 1 hour in COLD water. Wash in Daz powder or Daz tablets.

DO NOT use a colour or liquid detergent.

Alternatively, treat with Ace Coloursafe Bleach then wash as normal following the clothing care label.

Cream

Soak in a warm Daz solution or pre-treat with Ace Coloursafe Bleach. Wash as normal following the clothing care label.

Curry

Soak in a warm Daz solution or treat with Daz Liquid. Wash as normal following the clothing care label.

Egg

Soak in a warm Daz solution or pre-treat with Ace Coloursafe Bleach. Wash as normal following the clothing care label.

Fruit

Soak for 1 hour in COLD water. Wash in Daz powder or Daz tablets.

DO NOT use a colour or liquid detergent.

Alternatively, treat with Ace Coloursafe Bleach then wash as normal following the clothing care label.

Jam

Soak in a warm Daz solution or pre-treat with Ace Coloursafe Bleach. Wash as normal following the clothing care label.

Margarine

Pre-treat with Daz Liquid. Leave for 1 hour. Wash as instructed on the clothing care label.

Milk

Soak in a warm Daz solution or pre-treat with Ace Coloursafe Bleach. Wash as normal following the clothing care label.

Tea

Soak for 1 hour in COLD water. Wash in Daz powder or Daz tablets.

DO NOT use a colour or liquid detergent.

Alternatively, treat with Ace Coloursafe Bleach then wash as normal following the clothing care label.

Wine

Soak for 1 hour in COLD water. Wash in Daz powder or Daz tablets.

DO NOT use a colour or liquid detergent.

Alternatively, treat with Ace Coloursafe Bleach then wash as normal following the clothing care label.

Candle wax

Peel off any surface wax then sandwich the fabric with blotting paper or kitchen towel. Press with a warm iron from the back of the fabric. Wash as normal following the clothing care label.

Glue

Use nail varnish remove or acetone (don't use on synthetic fabrics such as acetates). Wash garment as instructed on the clothing care label.

Paint

To tackle water-based latex, acrylic and school paints and emulsion paints: Rinse stains while they're still wet using running water, then wash according to the clothing care label.

To tackle oil based paint and varnish: Sponge with white spirit or a proprietary paint brush cleaner before washing following the clothing care label.

Pen ink

Soak overnight in a COLD water solution of Daz Liquid. Then wash as instructed on the clothing care label. For older stains, dab with nail varnish remover (not for synthetic materials) then wash as normal as instructed on the clothing care label.

Shoe polish

Pre-treat with Daz Liquid. Leave for 1 hour. Wash as instructed on the clothing care label.

Anti-perspirant

Pre-treat the stain with Daz Liquid then soak in warm Daz solution. Wash as instructed on the clothing care label.

Deodorant

Pre-treat the stain with Daz Liquid then soak in warm Daz solution. Wash as instructed on the clothing care label.

Lipstick

Pre-treat with Daz Liquid. Leave for 1 hour. Wash as instructed on the clothing care label.

Mascara

Pre-treat with Daz Liquid. Leave for 1 hour. Wash as instructed on the clothing care label.

Vaseline

Pre-treat with Daz Liquid before washing according to the clothing care label. Stains that have set may require several treatments.

Grass

Soak in a warm Daz solution or pre-treat with Ace Coloursafe Bleach. Wash as normal following the clothing care label.

Grease

Pre-treat with Daz Liquid. Leave for 1 hour. Wash as instructed on the clothing care label.

Mildew

Soak white cotton and linens in a cold hypochlorite bleach solution (1 part bleach to 100 parts water). Soak other white fabrics in a solution of hydrogen peroxide. Rinse well then wash according to the clothing care label.

There is no safe home treatment for coloured fabrics, but careful use of peroxide and regular washing may reduce marks.

Mud

Let caked mud dry and scrape off the excess. Pre-treat remainder of stain with Daz Liquid then wash as normal in Daz, following the clothing care label. Hotter washes are more effective but do not exceed the temperature stated on the clothing care label.

Oil

Scrape off as much of the stain as possible. Soften the remainder with margarine or butter and wipe away with a clean rag. Treat any residual stain with a proprietary tar cleaner, then wash according to the clothing care label.

Rust

Difficult to remove from fine fabrics (wool, silk). For other fabrics sprinkle on salt and squeeze on lemon juice and leave overnight. Wash as normal as instructed on the clothing care label. For heavier stains use a rust remover then wash as normal following the clothing care label.

Tar

Scrape off as much of the stain as possible.
Soften the remainder with margarine or butter and wipe away with a clean rag.
Treat any residual stain with a proprietary tar cleaner, then wash according to the clothing care label.

Blood

If the stain is fresh, rinse immediately with cold water and wash in Daz following the clothing care label.

For an older, more stubborn stain treat with Ace Coloursafe bleach. Soak in Daz for 2 hours. Wash as normal following the clothing care label.

Urine

Soak in cold water, then wash in Daz following the clothing care label. Alternatively, treat with Ace Coloursafe Bleach then wash as normal following the clothing care label.

Vomit

Remove surface deposits under running cold water. Soak in Daz solution or treat with Ace Coloursafe bleach. Wash as normal following the clothing care label.
